Making Decisions Without Certainty: What Scientists Need to Learn When Building a Startup

Treat Decisions as Experiments
One helpful way to think about decision-making is to treat decisions not as permanent commitments, but as experiments.
Very few entrepreneurial decisions are truly irreversible. More often, it makes sense to take the first step while defining in advance when—and by which criteria—you will evaluate whether your approach is working. This reduces the pressure of making the "perfect" decision and creates space for rapid learning.
To avoid getting stuck in perfectionism or endless analysis, a few simple principles can help:
Use timeboxing. Set clear limits on how much time you spend researching and making a decision. Not every question deserves unlimited attention.
Reduce your options. Too many alternatives make decisions harder. In many situations, choosing between two or three realistic options is enough.
Accept "good enough." Perfection is rarely necessary for the next step. What matters is having enough information to make a well-informed decision.
Define the next small step. Big goals can feel overwhelming. Small, concrete actions create momentum and keep the process moving.

Ultimately, successful founders don't make better decisions simply because they know more. They make better decisions because they are willing to act despite incomplete information, continuously test their assumptions, and adjust their course whenever new evidence emerges.
Scientists are particularly well equipped for this challenge. Anyone who has learned to formulate hypotheses, design experiments, and learn from results already possesses many of the core skills of entrepreneurial thinking. The crucial difference is that the experiment is no longer confined to the laboratory but is happening in the marketplace.
